The Super Eagles of Nigeria put in one of their finest showings at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in recent times with a second-place finish in Ivory Coast.

The three-time Cup of Nations winners coasted to the final with former coach, Jose Peseiro, setting up the team in an astute defensive formation.

However, despite clinching second place at the showpiece, former coach of the Nigerian team, Gernot Rohr, believes the Super Eagles have made little progress since his departure from his role as coach in 2021.

In an interview reported by the media outlet OwnGoalNigeria, the Franco-German tactician emphasised that despite finishing second at the AFCON, the West African nation has made little progress since his departure.

"They haven't really made the progress they thought they would when they asked me to leave. It is still more of the players I left behind and a style of play that wasn't their best at the AFCON."

The Nigerian national team is currently without a coach ahead of the FIFA World Cup qualification series in June. However, the septuagenarian believes the Super Eagles will secure qualification to the showpiece despite their managerial situation.

"They are just two points behind the group leaders, and that is an advantage they can cancel in the next round of fixtures. You can't write off a team with such quality; every team in the group knows this."

The words of the Republic of Benin technical adviser mirror the sentiments of many stakeholders across the Nigerian football scene.

Despite Nigeria's seemingly impressive outing at the AFCON, many have criticised the tactical approach of the national team employed at the showpiece.
