Turkish champions Galatasaray are considering a loan move for Nigerian forward George Ilenikhena as they continue to assess attacking options ahead of the new season.

The 19-year-old, who only joined Al-Ittihad in February 2026, has struggled to make an immediate impact in Saudi Arabia, making five appearances without scoring and playing a total of 156 minutes.

Despite his slow start, Ilenikhena remains highly rated across Europe, having previously earned recognition for his performances with AS Monaco, where he broke a notable UEFA Champions League record by becoming the youngest African player to reach 15 appearances in the competition at the age of 19 years and 157 days, surpassing Nwankwo Kanu.

Reports in Turkey suggest Galatasaray have begun exploring attacking reinforcements amid uncertainty surrounding Mauro Icardi’s future, with the Argentine striker approaching the end of his contract.

The club are understood to be monitoring Ilenikhena closely as part of a broader recruitment strategy that includes planning for potential changes in their forward line, particularly with club captain Mauro Icardi set to leave and ongoing efforts to secure the long-term future of Victor Osimhen, who has attracted interest from leading European clubs.

“While the future of Mauro Icardi, whose contract will expire at the end of the season, remains uncertain, the management has begun to search for alternative strikers. One of the prominent names in this direction was Nigerian center forward George Ilenikhena, who is only 19 years old,” Ordu Yorum reported, citing Africa Foot.

The same publication highlights the player’s growing reputation, noting that he has been labelled the “new Osimhen” in some European circles due to his potential and playing style.

“Galatasaray started attempts to add the young striker, who is shown as ‘new Osimhen’ in Europe, to its squad. It is stated that Ilenikhena, which draws attention with its high potential, can have an important place in the long-term plans of the yellow-reds.”

Given the significant fee paid for the player and his long-term contract running until June 2029, any immediate permanent move appears unlikely, although discussions are said to be ongoing.

The report indicates that while talks have not yet reached an advanced or official stage, a loan arrangement is currently viewed as the most realistic option, allowing the player to regain form in a more competitive environment.

“While it is stated that transfer negotiations on the Galatasaray front have not yet reached official size, the loan formula may come to the fore due to the high transfer fee,” Ordu Yorum added.

“The yellow-reds believe the youngster can prove himself again in a more competitive league.”

Galatasaray’s interest in Ilenikhena reflects a longer-term approach to squad building, with the club seeking to balance immediate success with future planning as they prepare for potential changes in their attacking line.
