Cremonese striker, Cyriel Dessers has disclosed that football was not the ideal career he wanted to pursue despite being an enthusiast.

The Dutch-born Nigerian striker has indicated that his initial plan was to pursue a career in economics at the University.

After a year at the university, the 28-year-old said he decided to pay attention to football, and that gamble paid off as he signed his first professional contract at 19.

Looking back on his career, the Super Eagles striker said: “For me, football was Plan B, study was Plan A,” Dessers told TLN TV.

“And even when I became a professional player, quite late at 19 years old, my career went with ups and downs. But this is a part of me, and I will never give up.”

He added, “None of this came for free or came easy, but this only makes it worth more for me. When you have to work as hard as I did, when you have success, it only feels better. And you enjoy even more.”

Dessers has seen highs and lows in his career. Despite not being counted among the most flamboyant strikers, the ex-Feyenoord striker has achieved significant milestones in his career.

He was the top scorer of the maiden UEFA Europa Conference League last term with 10 goals for Eredivisie outfit Feyenoord Rotterdam.
