Over the last few decades, owning a professional sports team has become a status symbol among the mega-rich. However, the entry bar to the list of the wealthiest sports team owners got drastically higher in 2020 as the record year for billionaires` wealth.

According to data presented by 123scommesse.it, the world’s five richest sports team owners doubled their wealth in the last year, with their combined net worth reaching $274bn as of April.

The year 2020 was a fantastic year for the billionaires controlling some of the world’s most successful teams. Although many sports arenas and stadiums have remained empty amid the pandemic, the combined net worth of the 20 wealthiest sport club owners globally jumped by 60% YoY to $427bn in April 2021, according to Forbes data.

India’s richest person and the 12th wealthiest billionaire globally, Mukesh Ambani, tops the list of the wealthiest sports club owners. His cricket team, the Mumbai Indians, won the Indian Premier League champions title for the second year in a row. On top of that, shares of the billionaires` multinational conglomerate, Reliance Industries, rose by 85% in the last year, helping Ambani’s net worth to surge by 130% YoY to $84.5 billion.

Former Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, who has owned the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team since 2014, has also seen his fortune grow in the last year. Statistics show his net worth increased by 30% in the last twelve months, rising from $52.7bn to $68.7bn.

However, the American businessman, investor, and owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Daniel Gilbert, witnessed the biggest wealth growth in the last year. Gilbert owns several sports franchises, including the American Hockey League’s Cleveland Monsters and the NBA G League’s Canton Charge. He also operates the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland and chairs the gaming company JACK Entertainment. Over the last twelve months, his net worth surged by 700% to $51.9bn, placing him in the third place of the world’s wealthiest sports club owners.

The owner of the Stade Rinnai FC, François Pinault, ranked as the fourth wealthiest sports club owner globally. Statistics show the French billionaire and his family grew their wealth by 57% to $42.3bn in the last year.

The Red Bull billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz, who owns football clubs RB Salzburg, and RB Leipzig, and the F1 Red Bull Racing team, round the top five list. His net worth amounted to $26.9bn in April, 63% more than a year ago.

70% of the Wealthiest Sports Club Owners are from the US, Most of them Own Soccer or NFL ClubsAlthough the world’s richest sports club owner is from India, statistics show the United States has the most billionaires who control some of the world’s most successful teams. Out of the 20 billionaires on the list, 14 are from the United States. Russia ranked second with two billionaires on this list, while France, Austria, Canada, and Germany have one billionaire among the top 20 names.

Statistics also show that seven of the world’s wealthiest sports club owners control NFL clubs, the same number as the soccer teams. Basketball ranked as the third most profitable sport, with five clubs on the top 20 billionaires list. Two billionaires own a hockey club and only one a baseball club.
