Ex-England striker John Fashanu has described Nigeria's absence from this year's FIFA World Cup as a 'disaster'.

The three-time African champions will not feature at Qatar 2022 which kicks off in the next 12 days after losing the ticket to rivals Ghana.

The Augustine Eguavoen-led side failed to beat their West African counterparts at the National Stadium in Abuja following a goalless result in Kumasi in the first leg.

With the 22nd edition of the Mundial just around the corner, the former Wimbledon striker lamented the Super Eagles failure to make their 7th appearance at the World Cup finals.

“I think this it is a disaster that Nigeria failed to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar, and I also believe it is not just a disaster for the country but also for Africa majorly for the three-time African champions,” Fashanu said as per The PUNCH.

“With the Super Eagles you always have confidence heading into a game and I remember back then fans will smile before a game because they knew they (Eagles) were going to win by 3-0, but now things have changed.

The former England striker of Nigerian descent also described Nigeria's absence in Qatar as sad and disappointing for the Super Eagles players and fans alike.

“Now you are looking at the tournament in Qatar and you see some smaller countries which you have never seen before, and you can’t find Nigeria. It becomes heartbroken and sad. Obviously, the players are currently feeling very bad and morale is low, the same way every true Nigerian is feeling right now.

“It is very bad not qualifying for the biggest tournament in the world and it is really going to be boring for many Nigerians to watch.”
