FLASHBACK: How Gattuso accepted a pay cut to fund Osimhen's transfer to Napoli in 2020

Victor Osimhen has been a success since he joined Italian giants Napoli from the French club, Lille.

The 24-year-old who is in his second season has evolved to be one of the most sought-after players in the Seria A.

His influence has led the Italian side to win the Scudetto for the first time in 33 years.

Joining Napoli in a 70 million euros record transfer for an African player, he made an instant impact in is debut as Napoli defeated Parma by 2-0.

Napoli coach Gennaro Gattuso who is notoriously hard to please praised Osimhen and described him as a “young lad with the head of a 40-year-old”.

“I was struck by Osimhen’s serious attitude,” said Gattuso in the game against Parma. “He hasn’t forgotten where he came from and the sacrifices he made.

“He built himself up on his own and I congratulate him for his will and desire. He is a young lad with the head of a 40-year-old, I hope he doesn’t make mistakes and doesn’t change his attitude.”

You will also recall that Gattuso was prepared to accept a pay cut in order to raise funds for Victor Osimhen’s transfer from Lille, according to L’Equipe.

This comes after the youngster visited Napoli’s training facilities, plus head coach Gennaro Gattuso and president Aurelio De Laurentiis.

Osimhen, 21, grew up in a tough district of Lagos, lost his mother at a young age and, along with his brother and sister, sold bottled water to drivers stuck in the Lagos traffic to help his family make ends meet.
