Nigerian forward, Asisat Oshoala has spoken for the first time since the Super Falcons played out a draw against Canada in the first game of the tournament.

The Falcons recorded a draw against the highest-ranked team in Group B Canada in their opening game and are optimistic ahead of their second clash against co-hosts Australia on Thursday, July 27.

Speaking in an interview on BBC, she said: “When I step my foot on the pitch, I don’t really think about the crowd any longer. Some people say they get nervous when the crowd is too much, but for me, it is different."

“I’m just out there to do my job, I’m about my business.”

Oshoala, one of the key members of the team has been nominated for the prestigious Ballon d’Or, making her the sole African woman to reach such heights of recognition.

“This is top-level football, and it demands self-reflection. Even if you win the game, you have to ask yourself questions like, ‘Ok, maybe I could be better with the pass’ or whatever,” she said.

With an ardent fan base across Africa, the two-time Champions League winner acknowledges the responsibility she carries as a role model to numerous aspiring youngsters who look up to her.

“There are a whole lot of kids out there in Africa who actually look up to me; they tell me ‘you’re my icon, you’re my idol,’ and all of that, so I just keep doing what I’m doing,” she shared with humility.

“That’s why I always say when I play games, I just want to have fun. I want to score goals. I don’t know what’s going to happen in the end.”
