Everton vs Arsenal: Details emerge on why Martinelli’s goal was disallowed

Details have emerged on why Gabriel Martinelli's goal against Everton was disallowed.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was once again the biggest talking point during Arsenal's Premier League meeting with Everton on Sunday at Goodison Park.

The Guardian reports that Martinelli thought he had handed the Gunners the lead in the first half when he burst through on goal and slotted the ball into the corner beyond Jordan Pickford.

However, the goal was chalked off by VAR, cutting short Arsenal's premature celebrations.

The goal was disallowed after VAR ruled that Eddie Nketiah was offside in the build-up and the goal, much to the disappointment of Arsenal fans.

Nketiah found himself in the mix when Gabriel's pass made its way to the forward via a deflection from Beto.

Arsenal finished off the move through Fabio Vieira, who played in Martinelli to allow the Brazilian to tuck the ball home.

The Mirror reports as per the offside laws, Beto was judged not to have played the ball deliberately, meaning Nketiah was offside.

Arsenal stun Everton

Despite Arsenal's VAR heartbreak, the Gunners were still able to see off the Toffees courtesy of Leandro Trossard's only goal of the match.

Trossard came off the bench to help Arsenal cart home all three points after he replaced Martinelli, who came off injured.

Arsenal's vital win over Everton has them sitting fourth on the Premier League standings with 13 points, on level with second-placed Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool, who occupy third place.
