Cristiano Ronaldo will play in a record sixth European Championship after being named in Portugal's squad for this summer's tournament in Germany.

The 39-year-old, who currently plays for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, is one of 26 players selected by coach Roberto Martinez.

Ronaldo previously shared the record of five European Championship appearances with his former Real Madrid teammate, Spain's legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

He made his tournament debut at Euro 2004, where Portugal reached the final on home soil but lost to Greece.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner led the Selecao to victory at Euro 2016.

Despite his advanced age, the former Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus star has been in outstanding form at club level, scoring 42 goals in 42 games across all competitions, according to Transfermarkt.

Portugal boss explains why he included Ronaldo

Portugal manager Martinez explained his decision to include Ronaldo in the squad during a news conference, praising the veteran forward's goal-scoring prowess.

"Regarding Cristiano, it's better to talk about the data," Martinez said of the Al Nassr forward on Tuesday, as cited by ESPN.

"He is a player who scores 42 goals in 42 games for his club, and this shows his continuity and physical ability to always be fit, in addition to the quality he has in front of goal that we really like and need."
