Popular Nigerian skit maker, Lawrence Aletile, popularly known as Seyi Law has come to the aid of struggling former Super Eagles star, Femi Opabumi who is reportedly living in poverty after a failed career.

Opabumi will always feature prominently on the list of talented young Nigerian players who never reached their potential.

The ex-Nigerian left winger made his debut for the Super Eagles in 2002 scoring the second goal in Nigeria's 3-0 win over Kenya.

He also featured at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan/Korea where he played against the Three Lions of England in the Super Eagles' last group-stage match which ended in a goalless draw.

Opabumi was then the third youngest player to feature at the FIFA World Cup at 17 years and 100 days.

His career ended abruptly in 2006 after he suffered a vision impairment while playing outside the country.

According to unconfirmed reports, the former Shooting Stars player suddenly lost his sight during training with a French second-division side.

After two unsuccessful surgeries, he returned to Nigeria to find a cure for his partial blindness.

He was also reportedly duped by a Nigerian pastor who had promised to help him regain his sight.

As the Golden Eaglets gear up for the upcoming U-17 AFCON, it served as a reminder to Seyi Law who inquired about the whereabouts of Femi Opabumi.

Taking to his social media, the famous comedian wrote:

“I just saw the picture of the 2023 Golden Eaglets (U17), and I remember FEMI OPABUNMI of the 2001 U17.

“Femi was a baller's baller. Sharp winger, but I heard family wahala ruined his life. Great potential lost. If you watched the 2001 U17 World Cup, you would probably understand my feelings.”

“This guy was a dream unfulfilled. Our Amuneke's dreamed replacement. Chai! Where's OPABUNMI? The year before the internet. Clips of his exploits in the 2001 U17 World Cup would have you drooling in awe. Life en.”

“He had a lot of prospects, but it is so unfortunate what happened to him, and I was almost brought to tears when I was talking to him and explained to me how the issue started when he was in France and had to travel to the US to see a doctor.”

The PUNCH reports that the comedian reached out to the former Super Eagles star and donated some money to support him.
