CAF Player of the Year Award: Victor Osimhen gets huge boost ahead of Mahrez, Onana, Mane

Nigerian international Victor Osimhen has received a huge boost in the race for the 2023 CAF Player of the Year Award.

The 24-year-old had a remarkable 2022/2023 season helping Napoli win the Serie A title again after waiting more than 30 years.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently released the venue, date and criterion for the selection, which seems to favour the former Lille of France striker.

CAF announced that the period under review for those in contention for the prestigious prize would be from September 2022 to June 2023.

In that period, the striker netted 26 league goals in 32 matches, including the goal that sealed the Scudetto for the Partenopei.

The Super Eagles forward also netted five goals in six matches for his club in the UEFA Champions League.

On the international scene, Osimhen is the leading scorer having scored seven goals and registered two assists in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The forward showed class during the period and hopes to become the first Nigerian to win the award since Kanu Nwankwo in 1999.

Daily Post reports that this year’s awards ceremony is scheduled for December 11 in Morocco, although it remains to be seen if Rabat will be the host city again after hosting last year’s ceremony.

A number of players look good for the gong, including Achraf Hakimi, Riyad Mahrez, Andre Onana and Sadio Mane.
