Calvin Bassey stood immovable at Anfield on Saturday, marshalling Fulham’s defence to a goalless draw against Liverpool that earned the Cottagers their first point of the Premier League season, a display of the defensive excellence that has propelled his rise and now has Inter Milan prowling for his signature.

Wearing the captain’s armband, the Nigeria international played all 90 minutes, winning all three of his ground duels, making three recoveries, one interception and five clearances as Fulham frustrated Liverpool’s attack from start to finish.

He carried the second-highest rating in his team and the highest among Fulham’s defenders on the night, completing 82 per cent of his passes as the visitors held firm against a Liverpool side that started brightly and created several chances without ever finding a way past him.

The result arrived after a difficult start to the campaign for Alvaro Arbeloa’s side, who had lost all three of their opening matches, each by the narrowest of margins, going down 3-2 to both Chelsea and Crystal Palace and 1-0 to Sunderland. Ahead of the trip to Anfield, Bassey had warned that Fulham faced a stern test against a Liverpool team he rated among the best in the league.

“It is not going to be easy. You know what is coming when you play Liverpool, they have top players,” he said.

“It is just about doing our homework and seeing how we can hurt them. We talk with the manager about everything that might not have worked, and try and go into every game understanding more what he wants from us individually as players.”

That composure under pressure has become the defining trait of a career that has taken Bassey a long way from his beginnings in academy football.

Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, Bassey moved to England as a child and grew up in Newham, London, before joining Leicester City’s academy, where he spent three seasons without breaking into senior football. His move to Rangers in the summer of 2020 proved the turning point.

Splitting his time between left-back and centre-half, Bassey helped the Glasgow club win the Scottish Premiership by 25 points in his first season, a campaign in which they did not suffer a single league defeat and conceded just 13 goals, a run that also produced a Scottish record of 26 clean sheets. He went on to reach the Europa League final with Rangers the following year, and although the match ended in a heartbreaking defeat on penalties, his pace and strength at the back in that 1-1 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt won him widespread praise and caught the eye of clubs across Europe.

Ajax moved for Bassey shortly afterwards, paying an initial €23m for his signature, a club-record sale for Rangers.

Operating primarily at centre-back in Amsterdam, he made 39 appearances across all competitions for Ajax, scoring once and providing five assists, and sampled Champions League football for the first time in his career. His performances in the Netherlands persuaded Fulham to bring him to the Premier League in July 2023, in a four-year deal worth €21m that made him the most expensive Nigerian defender in history.

Bassey scored his first goal for the Cottagers in February 2024, in a 2-1 away win over Manchester United that was Fulham’s first victory at Old Trafford since 2003.

He has since gone on to establish himself as one of the most consistent defenders in the Premier League, winning the club’s Player of The Season award for the 2024/25 campaign after finishing as runner-up the year before, and making 30 league appearances last season alone. He has now featured 105 times for Fulham in all competitions, scoring four goals and providing one assist.

His rise at club level has mirrored his growth with the Super Eagles, for whom he was part of the squad that claimed silver and bronze at the 2023 and 2025 Africa Cup of Nations editions.

At club level, Bassey was handed the Fulham captaincy by new manager Arbeloa ahead of the current campaign, stepping in for the injured Tom Cairney, and has worn the armband in each of the club’s opening four Premier League matches.

The 26-year-old, now in his fourth season at Craven Cottage, has described the responsibility as a privilege, saying, “It is a privilege. Being able to captain this club is unbelievable.

“Going into my fourth season, I know the boys and get on with everyone, so I just be myself and try to help everyone.”

His consistency has not gone unnoticed elsewhere. Serie A champions Inter Milan have registered strong interest in Bassey, with manager Cristian Chivu understood to view the left-footed defender as a tactical fit for his system, comfortable both as a centre-back in a back three and as a traditional left-back.

Inter, who need to freshen up a defence built around ageing personnel, have tracked Bassey across multiple transfer windows and could move for him as his contract situation edges towards its final year.

Bassey’s present deal at Fulham runs until the summer of 2027, with the club holding an option to extend it by a further year. According to TeamTalk, Fulham are said to be preparing to open talks over a new long-term contract, a move that would strengthen their hand against any approach from Italy.

For now, the defender’s attention remains on steadying Fulham’s season and leading the Super Eagles’ defence into a crucial run of Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers later this month.
