Bassey eyes first Eredivisie title with Ajax

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey is not throwing in the towel despite his side occupying the 5th position on the Eredivisie league table at the end of the first round.

The Dutch champions are five points adrift of league leaders Feyenoord following their latest 1-1 draw against PSV Eindhoven.

Ajax has failed to replicate their remarkable form last season under manager Erik Ten Haag as they have only managed 9 wins, 6 draws, and 2 defeats in 17 league appearances this season.

The Amsterdam-based club also dropped to the Europa League after finishing in third place in the Champions League behind Napoli and Liverpool.

Alfred Schreuder’s side only finished above Glasgow Rangers after securing back-to-back wins against the Scottish giants.

Despite their disappointing campaign, Nigerian international, Calvin Bassey who joined de Godenzonen in the summer is confident that his side can stage a comeback to defend their Eredivisie crown.

“We have confidence in our coach and we want to show that we are not done here. We have a lot of quality in the team and we are not worried, Bassey told voetbalzone

“Let’s put the first half of the season behind us and focus on the future. We still have eighteen games to go.

“Every game is a final for us. We have to win them all, so I don’t feel any extra pressure”.

Bassey has been subjected to a barrage of criticisms from Ajax legends since joining the club last summer.
