Augsburg, Stuttgart track Onuachu

Bundesliga sides Augsburg and Stuttgart have emerged as contenders for the signature of Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

According to Daily Echo, the 29-year-old forward, who joined Southampton in January, has attracted interest from the German clubs after an underwhelming stint in the Premier League.

Despite making 11 appearances for the Saints, Onuachu started only four matches and failed to find the back of the net.

The towering Nigeria international was acquired by Southampton from Belgian champions Genk, where he showcased his goal-scoring prowess with an impressive tally of 16 goals in 19 games during the first half of the season.

Onuachu was brought in by former manager Nathan Jones, alongside Mislav Orsic and Kamaldeen Sulemana, to bolster the attacking options at the club. However, their combined efforts fell short in preventing the Saints’ relegation from the top flight.

Onuachu grew increasingly frustrated with his lack of involvement following the appointment of Ruben Selles as the new manager. The tactical philosophy of the Spaniard clashed with that of his Welsh predecessor, leaving doubts about how the £18m striker would fit into the new style of play.

Sport Republic chief Dragan Solak acknowledged to the Daily Echo that the change in management from Jones to Selles did not suit some of the club’s recent signings.

Sources close to Onuachu have revealed that it is highly likely he will depart Southampton this summer, with negotiations for his exit already underway. However, the club will only entertain offers that meet their satisfaction.

Augsburg and Stuttgart have expressed keen interest in securing the services of Onuachu, either on a permanent transfer or on loan. Additionally, Borussia Monchengladbach has also been linked with the Nigerian striker, while a return to Genk has not been ruled out.

One potential hurdle in the pursuit of Onuachu is his increased wages since joining the Premier League. Other interested clubs may find it challenging to meet his financial demands.

Meanwhile, Onuachu continues to participate in pre-season training under the guidance of new Southampton manager Russell Martin. Until a definitive decision is made regarding his future, the towering forward remains in contention for involvement with the relegated side in the Championship.
