Arsenal striker Obi pledges allegiance to Denmark, snubs Nigeria, England

Arsenal Under-18 striker Chidozie Obi-Martin is dreaming of playing for the Danish national team after pledging his international allegiance to the Red and Whites.

The Gunners youngster, who has been compared to Gabriel Jesus, has already featured for Denmark’s under-17s but was still eligible to represent either Nigeria or England.

According to the Daily Post, Obi, who was born to a Danish mother and a Nigerian father in Copenhagen but grew up in England, detailed why he chose to play for Denmark over the Super Eagles or Three Lions.

“I was born in Denmark, I have better friends in Denmark and I’m just really happy to play for Denmark. In Denmark, I have better teammates.

“It is easier to speak the language because I have lived longer in Denmark, so it just makes better sense. I hope to be able to play in the Danish national team for a long time, so I hope it’s just Denmark.”

Obi has scored nine times in 11 appearances for the Danish Under-17 team since making his debut in 2023.

Obi targets winning titles with Denmark

Meanwhile, Obi hopes to have a successful career with the Danish national team and end the country’s barren spell in international competitions by winning their first major title since 1992, Soccernet reports.

The teenager wants to achieve more success with Denmark than the outgoing golden generation led by Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen and former Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Obi is regarded as one of the best young talents in European football as he scored a hat-trick in a 4–0 win against Southampton last year in his first start for Arsenal Under-18 side.
