Arsenal have made Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman their primary transfer target ahead of Athletic Club’s Nico Williams as they look to strengthen their attacking options this summer, PUCNH Sports Extra reports.

The Nigeria international, who has enjoyed a stellar season with 18 goals and seven assists in 37 appearances, is widely expected to depart Bergamo after a successful three-year stint with Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.

According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal are among five Premier League clubs planning to hold talks with the 27-year-old ahead of the summer window, with Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle United also expressing interest.

Lookman’s remarkable transformation since his earlier Premier League spells has caught the attention of Europe’s elite clubs. During his time with Everton, Fulham and Leicester City, he managed just 11 goals in 96 appearances, but his record at Atalanta has been far more impressive with 50 goals in 115 matches across all competitions.

His memorable hat-trick in last season’s Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen further highlighted his quality on the biggest stage, and he has maintained that exceptional form throughout the current campaign.

Barcelona and Juventus have reportedly already contacted Lookman’s representatives to learn of his availability, but both clubs are unlikely to afford Atalanta’s asking price, which is believed to be between €60-65 million.

The Catalans’ well-documented financial difficulties may prevent them from competing with cash-rich Premier League sides, potentially paving the way for Lookman’s return to England.

If Arsenal are able to win the race for Lookman’s signature, it could spell the end of their long-standing pursuit of Athletic Club superstar Nico Williams.

The Spain international has been the Gunners’ priority left-wing target for the past 12 months, with FootballTransfers understanding that Mikel Arteta’s side were the most likely candidates to finalise an agreement with the 22-year-old.

However, given that both Lookman and Williams favour playing off the left flank, Arsenal are expected to sign only one of them, especially as Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard remain at the club.

Manchester United, who have struggled offensively this season with just 39 goals in 34 Premier League matches, are reportedly considering a bold swap deal involving Danish striker Rasmus Højlund to secure Lookman’s services.
