Arsenal 1:0 Man City: Peter Drury shared insights into his commentary for PL game

Peter Drury Peter Drury

Peter Drury is a popular voice on football commentary, but not many know what process goes into him delivering those poetic lines, that make it seem as if he had watched the game before it was played.

He was on commentary duty for Arsenal's 1-0 win over Manchester City even though he had little to do as the game had fewer highlights bar the winning goal by Gabriel Martinelli.

As per BR Football, the win ended City's 12-game winning streak over the Gunners. Since Pep Guardiola took over, the North London side have lost all games against the Citizens.

Drury shares insight into his prep

As reported by GMS Football, Drury has been Sky Sports lead commentator since the end of the 2022/23 season, since Martin Tyler, the famous voice behind "Agueroooooo", left the company after 33 years.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the crucial tie between last season's champions and runners-up, he explained how he prepares for his commentaries.

His most popular commentary was the 2018 Champions League semi-final on AS Roma's comeback win against Barcelona. Speaking to The Set Pieces, he admitted to being lucky as much as he is good.

“As a commentator, you’ve got to understand that you’re only as good as you are lucky,” he claimed.
Another of his popular comments was "Reeved in Red" for Cristiano Ronaldo's second return to Manchester United.

Drury's commentary on Martinelli's goal

Brazilian winger, Martinelli, popped up with the winning goal for the Gunners on Sunday. The 56-year-old delivered a short yet poetic comment on the incident.

“Martinelli, it's in again off Nathan Aké. It may be pivotal. Oh, that matters, how that matters. The moment,” he said.

He delivered further comments on Arsenal breaking the City jinx at the final whistle.

“Arsenal have cracked it. At last, Arsenal have cracked the City code. Arteta has it over Guardiola and the race is ripped wide open. The champions are floored, Gabriel Martinelli with the moment, an afternoon that was mean ungenerous. Stingy. Locked in. Unlocked at the very end and Arsenal have their way,” he exclaimed.
