Katsina: Governor wants better protection for rape victims

Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari

Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari is campaigning for the protection of victims who testify to rape.

The governor, in a recent rally organised by the Trade Union Congress in collaboration with the women commission in Katsina urged the police to provide maximum protection to this set of people.

According to him, there are many ways a woman can testify without really disclosing her real identity, Channels TV reports.

Governor Masari asked the law enforcement agencies to expedite action on those that are being detained.

Speaking further, he reminded people in the state that the consequences of keeping quiet on rape cases mean one had aided, abetted and helped rapists to escape justice, said Channels TV.

“Since last year, the state government through the House of Assembly enacted a law in order to prescribe two punishments – rape with murder is capital punishment, death.

“Rape without murder will attract life imprisonment. So I appeal to the law enforcement agencies in particular to expedite action on those that are being detained.

“However, one of the problems which you need to talk to women about is that if you are raped, you know the person who raped you and you keep quiet, you are allowing him to rape another woman,” he said.
