Update: Police rescue passengers abducted from a commercial bus in Osun

The police in Osun state says it has rescued the passengers abducted from a commercial bus at Odo-Osun, near Imesi-Ile in Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State on July 5.

The Osun State-bound commercial bus conveying passengers from Ekiti State was ambushed at Odo-Osun, on Ila Road at about 1:45 pm, and the gunmen took the passengers into the forest. Read the initial report here.

A statement released by the state police command spokesperson, SP Opalola Yemisi, states that the four abducted persons have been released.

"The Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, CP Olawale Olokode, psc in his frantic efforts and the support from other security outfits has rescued the four abducted commuters, reportedly kidnapped along Tafida Imesi-Ile and Ilare/Esa-Odo road on 4th and 5th July, 2021 respectively.

"Upon a distress call that the victims were abducted, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olawale Olokode, psc, drafted a combined team of police Tactical Unit, JTF and other security outfits on a rescue mission of the abducted commuters.

"The victims were rescued just about 1505hrs on 6th July 2021 along Ere-Ijesa, Ibokun road owing to the pressure mounted on the abductors by the police and other security agencies. No ransom was paid, but unfortunately, we lost one of the local security operatives while one of the victims was injured during the exchange of gunfire with the kidnappers and responding to treatment," the statement in part read.

Opalola added that the state commissioner of Police appeals to the good citizens of the state to report any suspected person(s) with bullet wounds to the police. He also assures the members of the public/commuters of their safety as security measures have been put in place to forestall future occurrences.
