University of Jos SUG protests as hoodlums kill another student

The Students Union Government (SUG), University of Jos chapter has expressed concern over the killing of another student of the institution on Thursday, August 19, 2021.

According to reports, the victim, a 100-level student of the University was pulled out of a tricycle and stabbed to death.

The incident happened on the Bauchi road axis of Jos.

Reports further indicated that the murdered student boarded the tricycle from the Permanent site of the university to the main campus, and on the way met his untimely death.

The SUG President of the University, Comrade Danladi Joshua Adankala stated that despite the development, the government had not demonstrated any commitment to the plight of the students in spite of their repeated calls to the government for help.

“At the risk of being misunderstood, we dare to state that just within few hours of the unfortunate incident at Rukuba road, the security agencies combed the entire area and arrested more than 20 suspects as contained in the press statement issued by the Nigerian Police Force.

“This means the security agencies can be effective if they want. But unfortunately, the innocent students of the University of Jos do not deserve such prompt attention and energy.

“If we really have a government that can respond swiftly to the Rukuba road incident, one would wonder what is happening to the helpless students of the University of Jos. This is no doubt an affirmation of the careless attitude of the government to the plight of the Nigerian students.

“This will prevent us from unnecessary trips to the markets in the neighbouring communities where our lives are jeopardized.

“As a matter of urgency, the state government should appeal to the federal government to facilitate the building of perimeter fencing around our institution. There should be more accommodation (hostels) for our students as it will go a long way in reducing the number of students that stay off-campus," he said.
