Suspected terrorists have abducted an unspecified number of students sitting for the National Examinations Council (NECO) exams in Lassa community, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday morning when armed men stormed the school around 9 a.m., firing shots before taking away several students.
Women selling food within the school premises were also said to have been abducted during the attack.
The spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident, stating that security operatives responded promptly and engaged the attackers, preventing a more extensive abduction.
“About 9 a.m., ISWAP attacked Lassa Day Secondary School, shooting sporadically. An unspecified number of students were abducted. Security forces confronted them, and the Commissioner of Police has deployed the Area Commander in Askira/Uba. They are currently combing the bush,” Daso said.
Daso confirmed that the command has deployed security operatives in the community.
Solomon Kwamagar, Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri and a native of Lassa, also confirmed the attack.
According to him, the assailants rode into the community on motorcycles through the Lassa market before heading to Government Day Secondary School.
“Today is Lassa market day. I was informed they came through the market on motorcycles and invaded the school. They shot and killed one teacher and took away students from their classrooms,” he said.
Kwamagar added that efforts were ongoing to verify the exact number of students and staff affected by the incident.
