A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ota, Ogun State, on Thursday remanded five traditionalists in a custodial centre for allegedly attacking some Muslims in the Idiroko area of the state.

Violence broke out on Tuesday when the traditionalists, who had imposed a curfew over their Oro festival, clashed with the Muslim faithful, who were observing their evening prayer.

It was also gathered that the Oro adherents attacked an Islamic cleric, Bola Wasiu, inflicting machete cuts on his head.

The PUNCH learnt that during the clash, the Muslims got hold of three of the alleged attackers and handed them over to the police in the area.

The police arraigned five suspects on Thursday before Magistrate A. O. Adeyemi in connection with the attacks.

The court admitted the traditionalists to bail, but they were unable to perfect their bail conditions. The magistrate therefore ordered that they be remanded until they meet the conditions.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the traditionalists had been severally invited to Abeokuta for peace talks.

He said the Commissioner of Police had also visited the area to sensitise the people to why it was illegal to impose daylight curfew on people in the 21st century.

The PPRO wondered why a group of people would, in the name of Oro festival, prevent Muslims and Christians from serving their God.
