Makinde is the cause of insecurity in Ibadan - Traditional Council

Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde has been blamed for the rising security challenges affecting the state by Ibadan Traditional Council.

The council called the governor out over the weekend when it held a meeting at the palace of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji.

It called on him to change tactics before it is too late.

The council which comprises members of the Olubadan-in-Council, other monarchs in Ibadan land, and family heads called the Mogaji accused the governor of running a one-man administration, which they noted was affecting the security of lives and property.

They said one-man management cannot work in securing the state.

According to them, attempts to meet the governor and explain why his style was failing the state were unsuccessful.

The traditional rulers accused Makinde of having poor respect for them. They explained that they were excluded in the security architecture despite that they were closer to the people in the communities, The Nations reports.

Asking community leaders in Ibadan to raise vigilance groups comprising youths in their areas of jurisdiction, the monarchs said: “What is unfolding security-wise in the state capital looks fearful and raises concern among the people. The reason all hands must be on deck.”

The Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Sen. Lekan Balogun, appealed to the governor to change his approach, stressing that excluding the traditional institution has not been helpful to good maintenance of security in Ibadan.

Reacting, however, the Executive Assistant on Security to Governor Makinde, retired commissioner of police Sunday Odukoya, described the claim as an opinion.

He said Ibadan is still the safest city in the Southwest.

Odukoya said Makinde has invested so much in security by empowering security agencies, adding that he has promoted inter-agency collaboration as well as synergy between state and non-state actors in security.
