A video of some police officers brutalising a man for refusing to hand over his mobile phones to be searched.
The man was seen beaten and slapped continuously by three policemen who were armed with guns at the Oko-Oba abattoir area of Lagos.
A Twitter user with the name @cashy0206 who claimed to be the victim, said he committed no offense as no drugs or evidence was discovered on him, but that his only offense was to refuse the police officers access to his phone.
He tweeted, “No drugs, nothing, no evidence, why asking for phone for no reason? I don’t know why.
“They don’t have any tangible reason all in the name of stop and search and no evidence and they changed it to bring your phone that’s where it started.
“I need justice, please. We didn’t deserve this, 27 years of age own a car and that’s a problem. They want us to live in poverty. Why beating me cause I didn’t give you my phone?”
Another Twitter user claim to know the officers recorded brutalising the young man as he identified one of them as a notorious officer who is is fond of engaging in such illegal actions.
The Twitter user, @Booms883 said, “Agege Abattoir Police Station officers b dis. I sabi all these guys with their illegal movement. They move with korope mini bus. Their DPO knows about it. In fact, that short police na muscle e dey drive, u can never see him wear uniform.”
Reacting to the viral video, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, demanded the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, to fish out the policemen for investigation.
Adejobi also urged the victim to send him a direct text message as he requires further information on the matter.
“Ben, fish out these policemen for investigation. We need to look into this. And the victim to send an sms to me, personally as I need some info from him or them. I am interested in this disgusting scene/drama,” the Force PRO said.
Reacting to the incident, here are some social media comments;
Despite all the disciplinary actions taken against these erring officers, they still continue to harass and brutalize those they are supposed to protect. It's like they're allergic to good behavior!
