Kwara State hit with fire outbreak; several shops destroyed

Fire reportedly razed several shops at Owode market in Kwara state on Monday, April 1, 2024.

In a video making rounds, shop owners were seen wailing over the loss of their properties to the inferno.

A trader said; “This light is too much. This is not caused by NEPA (electricity). Maybe some people were cooking and the fire started from there because this light is much.”

It was reported that personnel of the Federal Fire Service and the Kwara State Fire Service made their way to the scene and quenched the fire which affected about five shops.

“The authorities are still assessing the situation, but personally, I know at least five shops were affected. The worth of goods and properties destroyed can’t be said now until the assessment finishes.

“There are also several claims as to the cause of the fire until we wait for the fire service to release their statement on it,” the source said.

According to Saharareporters, fire razed a residential building in the Kwara state barely eight months ago.

Properties worth N6.5 million were reported destroyed in the fire. The incident was said to have happened at 1:05am at Kowope compound, Olorunkuse area, Offa, leaving two-bedroom flats and four shops destroyed.

Spokesman of Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the incident. According to him, the immediate intervention of the firefighters saved properties worth several million naira.
