Kidnapping: Cross River to register boats

Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade

The Cross River State Government says it will register and license all wooden, fibre engine boats and vessels operating in its waterways effective December 1, 2021.

According to a statement by the Director-General, Cross River Waterways Agency, Bobby Ekpenyong, in Calabar on Wednesday November 24,2021 the registration was necessitated by the worsening rate of kidnapping and other crimes along the state’s waterways.

He said, “Governor Ben Ayade is worried about the incessant kidnapping and illegal activities going on in the state’s waterways.

“He has directed that necessary measures be put in place to arrest the ugly trend.

“I want to use this opportunity to warn all operators of wooden boats, fibre engine boats and vessels, that any unregistered boats/vessels will be impounded from January 1, 2022.”

In recent times, kidnappers in Calabar have reportedly used the waterways to escape to the creeks with their victims.
