Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi

The Lagos State Government on Thursday said it had activated 10 COVID-19 oxygen treatment and sample collection centres as well as 20 local government area-based COVID-19 sample collection sites.

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, in a statement on Thursday, said the move was to mitigate the effect of the third wave of COVID-19 infection in Lagos State.

Abayomi noted that the centres which were established during the peak of the first and second waves of the pandemic had been “reinvigorated to provide swift oxygen therapy to residents who required it and easy access to COVID-19 testing for citizens.”

He explained that the 10 COVID-19 oxygen treatment and sample collection centres were strategically located in 10 LGAs with a high burden of COVID-19 infection cases to provide oxygen support to residents.

“The 20 local government area-based COVID-19 sample collection sites are community-based sites operated by the medical officers of health in each of the 20 LGAs and supervised by the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board in collaboration with the Lagos State Biobank to increase the ease of access of residents to testing,” Abayomi said.

He added that the state government was working to ramp up testing, as well as improve on its management of COVID-19 cases by providing access to quality care services to lower the curve of the third wave and prevent the infection from spreading.
