Girl, 8, dies after falling on iron rod in Kano

An eight-year-old girl, Siyama Idris, has died after falling on an exposed iron rod at an ongoing road and drainage construction site in Tudun Wada quarters of Nassarawa Local Government Area, Kano State.

The incident occurred on Saturday near Tudun Wada Primary School where construction work is ongoing.

Eyewitnesses told Daily Trust that the girl was sent to a nearby shop to buy items for Ramadan iftar when she attempted to cross the drainage using a makeshift wooden plank bridge.

“She slipped and fell directly on an uncovered iron rod used for the drainage structure. It pierced her stomach and she died instantly,” said Aminu Adamu, a resident of the area.

Another witness, Balarabe Isah, said residents have long relied on the plank bridge due to the absence of a proper pedestrian crossing.

He described the site as unsafe, with exposed metals and open drainage edges posing risks to passersby daily.

Community members have blamed poor safety measures at the construction site for the tragedy, urging authorities to enforce stricter precautions to prevent further loss of lives.
