Father, his 4 children, 95 others die in Kwara boat accident

Several people have been reported dead after a boat conveying over 100 persons capsized in Egbu village, Patigi local government area of Kwara State.

The victims were said to be returning from a wedding ceremony at neighboring Egboti village in Niger State, when the unfortunate incident occurred on Monday, June 12.

Reports indicate that about 50 bodies have been recovered from the scene of the accident including, men, women and children.

A father and his four children also died after the boat was suddenly overpowered by river waves and smashed against a tree.

It has been gathered that 69 people are from Egbu village, 36 from Gakpan village and four from Kpada village in the Patigi local government.

The Spokesperson for the Kwara state police, Okasanmi Ajayi, confirmed the incident on Tuesday. He noted that the command had deployed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the Patigi local government area of the state to the area to gather more information on the incident.

“There was a scanty report of a boat that capsized while carrying about a 100 people in a village in Patigi local government area of the state. The command will give more details on the incident as soon as detailed information arrives from the area,” Okasanmi Ajayi said.
