‘Apologise for mourning the living’ - Enugu APC tackles NDC over airport and secretariat clashes

The Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has demanded an unreserved public apology from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing the opposition party of spreading falsehoods and observing a minute of silence for living individuals following weekend political clashes in the state.

The political feud erupted after the Enugu NDC, represented by Emmanuel Chukwujekwu Nebo, held a press conference disputing statements made by the Secretary to the Enugu State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.

The NDC claimed it had only organized an airport reception for its governorship candidate, Chinyeaka Ohaa, at Akanu Ibiam International Airport rather than an unauthorized "Grand Statewide Campaign Flag-off".

The opposition party also stated it was "still verifying the final medical status" of individuals injured in a separate shooting incident at its state secretariat.

Responding to the opposition's claims, Enugu APC Publicity Secretary, Chief Uche Obute, slammed the NDC for attempting to manufacture political drama.

"The question is: since the NDC was still verifying the final medical status of person or persons injured in their party fracas, how come they declared and observed a minute’s silence to mourn the living?"

Obute questioned. "The answer is simple: it was true to the factionalised Enugu NDC’s pattern to orchestrate violence among themselves and attribute it to Enugu APC to extract cheap political capital."

Obute further dismissed the NDC's denial regarding the scale of the airport gathering, producing social media promotional materials from candidate Chinyeaka Ohaa that explicitly advertised a "Grand Statewide Campaign Flag-off 2026" at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport.

Commending Governor Peter Mbah’s administration for maintaining regional peace and security, the APC spokesperson urged opposition figures to focus on policy debates rather than stoking political tension ahead of the 2027 polls.

Aviation laws and airport security protocols across Nigeria strictly prohibit political rallies, mega campaigns, and uncontrolled crowds on airport tarmac grounds to ensure flight operations and passenger safety remain uncompromised.
