Indeed, the words of Sir Ahmadu Bello in an interview he granted an international media platform in 1964 have become evident in today's Nigeria.

In the interview, the Premier of Northern Nigeria gave a somewhat interesting response about his policy of Northernization.

At the time, the country had just gained its independence from British rule in 1960.

The nation was divided into three regions - North, South, and East.

"When I came here, there weren't even 10 Northerners in the civil service then I tried to get it Northernised and now an all-important post is being held by Northerners," he said in the interview.

"In an actual sense, it is a Northerner first, if we can't get a Northerner then we get an expatriate like yourself on contract. If we can't, then we can employ another Nigerian on contract too," he added.

His response brings to bear the deep-rooted rivalry and hate amongst Nigeria's biggest ethnic groups.
