The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko Yakasai, believes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar can “anoint” Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to fly the flag of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 general election.

Yakasai commented in response to the ongoing debate on the ADC's presidential ticket and the roles to be played by key opposition figures ahead of the polls.

He described Atiku as a father and a leader when asked if Atiku would prevent Obi from securing the ADC ticket.

“Atiku Abubakar is a leader; he is a father. He will not even join in that shenanigan,” he said.

According to him, the former vice-president has the right to contest but could also choose to support another candidate if that would improve the party’s chances.

“He has the right (to contest) but he also has the right to anoint somebody. He can, it is within his fundamental human rights as a father who wants to win.

“Winning does not mean I have to be the one, winning can be me taking you and say go and win for us, I know you are capable. It is possible,” Yakasai added.

The remarks come amid growing discussions within opposition circles over the presidential ticket of the coalition-backed party as Obi’s supporters continuously call on the party leaders to present their principal as their 2027 presidential candidate.
