The resignation of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has generated mixed reactions on social media.
Governor Adeleke, who is seeking a second term, quit the party citing internal wranglings that he said could jeopardize his chances in the upcoming polls.
His resignation was announced in a statement by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Monday, December 1.
“Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) since November 4th, 2025,” Mr. Rasheed wrote.
The spokesperson added that the letter was addressed to the PDP Chairman for Ward 2, Sagba Abogunde in Ede North Local Government Area of Osun State.
“Due to the current crisis within the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the PDP with immediate effect,” the letter stated, as quoted by Mr. Rasheed.
“I thank the Peoples Democratic Party for the opportunities given to me for my elections as a Senator (representing Osun West) and as Governor of Osun State under the Peoples Democratic Party.”
While a decision has not yet been made on the political party he will join ahead of the August 2026 elections, reports indicate that Adeleke attempted to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) and had the support of President Bola Tinubu. However, the move was reportedly blocked by the local APC leadership in Osun State.
The Osun State governorship election will hold next August, with Mr. Adeleke expected to seek a second term. Although he was elected on the PDP platform, he now appears set to contest on another party’s ticket.
Mr. Adeleke becomes the latest state governor to quit the PDP, amid reports that more may follow. Others who have recently left the opposition party include the governors of Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Enugu states.
