2027 election: 5 reasons northern stakeholders may still back Tinubu

As Nigeria edges closer to the 2027 general election, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is faced with both praise and criticism over his policies.

Yet, despite economic pains and political rumblings, a growing number of northern stakeholders believe Tinubu deserves their continued backing.

1. Broad northern representation in government

Many northerners argue that Tinubu has ensured strong regional inclusion in his administration.

From the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to the Minister of Defence, the National Security Adviser and the Chief of Defence Staff, northerners occupy several high-profile posts, Daily Trust reported.

Tinubu also inaugurated the North-West and North-Central Development Commissions to channel federal resources to the region. Senate leader Ali Ndume lauded Tinubu as a “listening leader” when 12 more northerners were added to the cabinet in May 2025.

2. Major infrastructure projects in the North

Supporters point to an array of infrastructure projects racing towards completion. The Abuja–Kaduna–Kano expressway, Kano–Katsina–Maradi rail line, Kaduna refinery upgrade, Abuja–Kano gas pipeline and Kolmani oil drilling fields have all received renewed attention.

In addition, new schemes like the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway and expanded agriculture value chains are aimed at boosting northern trade. Observers argue that this level of investment signals a serious federal commitment to northern development.

3. Agricultural and social programmes

Tinubu has also launched initiatives tailored to the region’s challenges. The new Ministry of Livestock Development is designed to modernise pastoral farming, while student loans and vocational training programmes are being expanded in northern states, Premium Times reported.

Kaduna governor Uba Sani called the loan scheme a “lifeline to millions of young people.”

Though subsidy removal has brought economic strain, supporters liken the reforms to “labour painsm" harsh but temporary sacrifices for future growth.

4. Security and stability efforts

Security remains one of the most pressing concerns in the North. Yet, some governors credit Tinubu’s administration with major gains.

Gombe’s Inuwa Yahaya noted that “over 300 bandit kingpins and terrorist commanders” have been neutralised.

Kaduna’s Uba Sani also praised the president for prioritising security and economic inclusion.

Defence officials stress that Tinubu’s strategy emphasises community policing, counter-terrorism and regional cooperation, areas where past governments were seen to fall short.

5. Political alliances and unity

Tinubu’s alliances with northern leaders and groups continue to strengthen his prospects. At a 2025 forum, Yahaya reminded northerners that Tinubu “has earned our continued support.”

The APC formally endorsed him for 2027, citing the need to sustain reforms.

Even opposition figures have crossed over, with governors from Plateau, Anambra, Osun and Abia states aligning with Tinubu.

For many elites, the North-Southwest alliance remains a stabilising political force, and a fragmented opposition only boosts Tinubu’s chances.

El-Rufai advises Nigerians on 2027

Previously, Legit.ng reported that Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the former Kaduna state governor, has alleged that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is pushing Nigeria towards authoritarianism.

In clear terms, the former governor warned Nigerians that the president wants to make himself a “life president.”
