Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has requested the resignation of the chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu.

Recall that INEC contrary to calls that the election was marred with irregularities declared the flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, the winner of the February 25 election with 8,794,726 votes.

The former Lagos governor defeated Atiku and Obi who polled 6,984,520 votes and 6,101,533 votes respectively.

Speaking for the first time about the controversies that surrounded the polls, Yakubu admitted that a number of issues affected the outcome of the polls.

He spoke when he met Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Sunday, March 5.

However, Atiku in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, on Sunday said: “Prof. Yakubu should be man enough to own up to his failure.

“A fish rots from the head down, and that is what has happened at INEC.

“Rather than suspend any staff, the INEC chairman is the one that needs to step aside as his first act of contrition.”
