We're going to deploy e-voting machines for Anambra poll - INEC boss Yakubu

Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), said the body is putting every plan in place to use electronic voting the forthcoming Anambra state election.

Speaking on Wednesday, November 4, the INEC boss revealed that the Anambra governorship election will hold in 2021 with N1 billion budgeted for the poll.

Legit.ng gathers that Mahmood made this disclosure while appearing before the Aisha Dukku-led House of Representatives committee on electoral matters where he defended the 'commission's budget.'

The INEC boss also declared that Nigeria is taking a stronger leap towards the full adoption of electronic voting which he said will end the manual electoral process.

He further explained that 40 companies have submitted proposals on the production of technology for voting, adding that the proposals are still being considered.

“But, we have determined we were going to deploy electronic voting machines, or electronic ballot machines in elections, possibly in Anambra governorship elections next year.”

Yakubu also stated that INEC is considering making provisions for early and diaspora voting.

He, however, said this would be subjected to amendments of the electoral act and other relevant sections of the constitution.

Meanwhile, INEC has announced that the next presidential election will hold on February 18, 2023.

Speaking on Thursday, October 15, the electoral commission's chairman made this known while addressing pressmen during a media briefing in Abuja.

INEC boss also inaugurated a special Adhoc committee on the review of the 1999 constitution.

According to him, the country has lesser days to the next general election, charging members of the House of Representatives to make a swift move on the amendment.
