The Yoruba Council Worldwide has stripped former President Olusegun Obasanjo of all his titles in the Yorubaland.

According to a statement released on Tuesday, September 19 and signed by the group’s president, Aare Oba Oladotun Hassan Esq, Obasanjo has been derecognized as the Balogun of Owu Kingdom in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

This comes following the incident that occurred between Obasanjo and the monarchs present during the launch of some state government projects in Iseyin, Oyo state.

Recall that a video of the former head of state ordering the monarchs to stand up and show respect went viral and caused a stirred among many Nigerians of Yoruba descent, especially monarchs in the South West.

Reacting to the incident, the Yoruba Council Worldwide president, issues a three-day deadline for Obasanjo to tender an apology or risk losing his titles.

Obasanjo in his defense said that his reason for asking the monarchs to stand up and show respect for Governor Seyi Makinde when he arrived because as per the constitution, the Governor is above the monarchs.

He, however, failed to apologise. The group in the statement said:

"..having waited endlessly for your compliance to the 3 days earlier call for sober apology press conference via our widely circulated notice on 16th September, 2023, we hereby declared and seize to recognize your Chieftaincy titles conffered on you by any monarchs in Yoruba Land, including the Balogun of Owu Kingdom, upon your brazen refusal to apologize, degradation and disparaging comments to the Yoruba Obas on the 15th September, 2023 at Iseyin, Oyo State: A Total Sacrilege."

The group also revealed that strict legal measures would be carried out against the ex-President. Adding that they "shall mobilize all market women, youths and leaders of thoughts for onward sanitization and compliance to our declaration forthwith."
