The Labour Party (LP) gubernatorial candidate for Imo, Athan Achonu, has said that no amount of money can buy him off as he is relentless in his pursuit for change in the state.

He maintained that he is the leading candidate in the upcoming election and even in the face of attempts by the incumbent Governor Hope Uzodinma to discourage him as he remains resolute in his desire to win.

There are rumours that he is a placeholder candidate who could be persuaded to withdraw.

However, Achonu dismisses the claims, saying he plans to contest the election till the end.

Achonu said this during an interview on Channels Television's Politics Today on Friday, October 20.

Achonu said:

“The people of Imo State already know the truth. They are following me. How can I be a placeholder for Hope Uzodimma? Give me $1 million? That’s not possible.

“I have been around in this country. I am very well known. I can say that for myself. So, I have a reputation in this country. I am a man of integrity. Hope Uzodimma can’t buy me even with $100 million. It is not possible. Nobody can buy me. Money can’t buy me.”

According to the former legislator, he initially has no intention to run for the Imo governorship election, but was convinced by his supporters.

He noted that his motivation to rewrite history in the state compelled him to enter the governorship race.

Senator Achonu said:

“So, they said if I abandon them, they would not have any place to go. That’s why I really went into that race. I didn’t want to run for governor."
