'How I was betrayed in 2015' - Jonathan opens up amid call to join 2027 race

Goodluck Jonathan, the former President of Nigeria, has disclosed that he had a lot of experience with betrayals during his re-election campaign in 2015.

He made the comment while speaking at the 70th birthday celebration of Chief Mike Aiyegbeni Oghiadomhe in Benin, the capital of Edo state, on September 4.

The former President also claimed that Nigerian politicians cannot be depended upon, saying Oghiadomhe was one of the few who stuck their neck out for him.

His statement reads in part: “Politics in the Nigerian standard is about betrayals. I have witnessed a lot of betrayal during the 2015 election.”

According to Daily Trust, he added that it was difficult to find any Nigerian politician who kept to his or her word, frankly stating that their promises in the morning would change in the afternoon and the evening.

PDP bigwigs rally for former President Jonathan

Jonathan made the comment after several Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) bigwigs, particularly in the northern blocs, had tipped him as the party's flagbearer in the 2027 election.

For instance, Sule Lamido, the former governor of Jigawa, recently said the former leader would be the best bet for the PDP to sack President Tinubu and the ruling APC in the 2027 general election.

He had called on the leading opposition party to make a deliberate push to ensure that the ex-President returns to the PDP, stating that no current PDP member from the southern bloc has the kind of experience of Jonathan.

Lamido made the call while speaking on Channels TV's Politics Today, adding that Nigerians would support anyone that the PDP put forward in the 2027 presidential election.

Days later, the former governor denied being nominated by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to be Jonathan's running mate in the 2027 election.

Also, the spokesperson of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, declared that Jonathan remained a member of the party. He made this known on Wednesday morning, August 27, while addressing the rumours surrounding the ex-President's membership of the PDP while speaking on the party's choice candidate in the 2027 presidential election after zoning its ticket to the south.
