He can’t win unless he merges with Kwankwoso - Obidients react as LP gives Obi 2027 presidential ticket

The Labour Party emerged as a force to reckon with ahead of the presidential elections in March last year. Their emergence as a force was only made possible by Peter Obi who defected to the party from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Since his move, the party has risen to new heights. Built on the socialist construct, it has emerged as the party that provides the opportunity for ordinary Nigerians to contest and win elections.

Its ascension in Nigeria's political scene, however, didn't come with its challenges. Internal wrangling, power tussles, and allegations of financial misappropriation at some point after the polls threatened the peace of the party.

When everyone presumed there was peace within the party, a conflict between the founders of the party, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), and the leadership of the party began.

The situation escalated to the point where the NLC accused the National Chairman of the party of running the affairs of the party as a sole administrator. This resulted in the NLC passing a vote of no confidence in the leadership of the national chair of the party and consequently called for his resignation.

From the outcome of yesterday's national convention, their plan failed, and Abure was re-elected as the national chairman of the party.

At the convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the party in the 2023 polls was announced as the presidential aspirant for the 2027 elections.

The decision by the Labour Party’s highest decision-making body, the National Convention was contained in a Communique issued.

It was signed by the re-elected National Chairman of the party, Comrade Julius Abure, and National Secretary, Umar Faruk Ibrahim.

The communique read in part: “The Convention in session based on the antecedents of the Presidential candidate before, during and after the 2023 General Election recommend that the 2027 Presidential ticket of the party be solely reserved for His Excellency, Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, the National leader of the party.

“Furthermore, the Convention in session reviewed ongoing development and performance of its Governor in Abia state, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti and pass a vote of confidence on him and recommend the 2027 Abia state Gubernatorial ticket of the party be reserved for His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti.”

The Labour Party has granted Peter Obi the right of first refusal for its presidential ticket in the 2027 general elections.

The decisions by the party have since generated mixed reactions on various social media channels. On Instagram, a user with the handle, @onyin_lizzy wrote "..we go still vote for am," while another with the handle @ugomsinaobichukwu said "I will never waste my time to vote in Nigeria again. Obi is not motivating at all, he stood and watched our efforts swept under carpet in the name of being a peaceful person the same mistakes Jonathan made. Anybody that win should govern I rest my case."

Meanwhile, others like @iamtamakisa opined the former Anambra State governor "will never be president of Nigeria".
