Guber election: Voter apathy mars polls in Oyo

Low turnout of voters has characterised the ongoing gubernatorial and state House of Assembly elections in Oyo State, DAILY POST reports.

Some of the local government areas visited by a DAILY POST correspondent included Ido, Ibadan North, Ibadan North West and Ibadan South West.

Our correspondent observed that only a few people were seen in the queues in the majority of the polling units.

This contrasts with what was observed during the last presidential and National Assembly elections held on Saturday, 25th February this year despite the early arrival of electoral materials.

A chieftain of the Accord Party in the state, Adegboyega Adegoke, while speaking, noted that what happened today may be a result of what happened in the last few days in the state.

Adegoke addressed journalists at the premises of Oke-Ado High School in Unit 10, Ward 10, Ibadan South West local government.

He then appealed to the people of the state to come out and exercise their franchise.

Adegoke said, “People are scared. It may be due to the prevailing security situation in the state in the last few days.

“People don’t want to be killed. But, I appeal to the people to come out and exercise their franchise.

“Nobody will harass anyone here. The security is more tighter than the last elections”.
