Governor Obaseki says he did not join politics to make money

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state has said he did not join politics to make money or attain fame.

Obaseki made the statement in Benin on Thursday, October 29, when he spoke about the need for politicians to prioritise people-oriented policies.

He said leaders in Nigeria must be selfless for the country to attain its potentials.

The governor said: “Only few persons in government are held accountable for their decisions in government.

“I am not in government to make money; I am not in government for fame. I am in government to serve."

He stated that the youths are the reasons why he is in government, noting that he would quit if he cannot serve the people.

Obaseki said the structural challenges in Nigeria need to be fixed for the country to work.

He advocated for the security arrangement in the country to reflect the federal system.

Meanwhile, the deputy governor of Edo state, Comrade Philip Shaibu, has denied the allegations that some food items meant to be distributed as COVID-19 palliative were found at his private residence.

A report by Vanguard stated that there was a widespread rumour that some food items were kept at a hall in the deputy governor's residence.

However, reacting through his media aide, Benjamin Atu, on Monday, October 26, Shaibu said the allegation was deliberately orchestrated by his detractors to find an excuse to attack his home and destroy his properties.

In another news, victims of police brutality in Edo have been promised justice as the state judicial panel of inquiry commences sitting in the state capital.

According to Jack Obinyan, SSA to the governor of the state on new media, who disclosed this on Twitter, criminal elements in the security agencies will be brought to book.

He said civilians who participated in looting in the state will also face the wrath of the law.
