The Peoples Democratic Party in Anambra State is set to review the overall performance of the party and the attitude of its aspirants at the November 6 governorship election in the state.

Addressing journalists during the party’s stakeholders meeting in Awka on Tuesday, the state Chairman of PDP, Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu, said the move was necessary as some party members and aspirants engaged in anti-party activities which negatively affected the party at the poll.

Nwobu pointed out that reviewing the general performance of the party and recommending necessary sanctions for errant members would strengthen their chances in the next elections.

He disclosed that defectors, who meet the required criteria would be welcomed back into the party, not as an old member, but as a fresh member. Nwobu stated, “We are going to set up a committee to understudy our performances at the November 6 governorship elections and recommend the way forward for the party and also appropriate sanctions on members found to have engaged in anti-party activities.

“Defectors would be welcomed back into the party as new members without any special status. It is regrettable that some of our governorship aspirants, including some party officials and stakeholders, defected to other political parties at a time they were needed most.

“It all started at the end of our party primaries. Some contestants rejected the outcome and defected to other parties. Unfortunately, some of our party officials and members left the party too.

“We will set up a post-election review committee to deeply look into this, identify what transpired, why we failed, where we failed, contributory factors, people who contributed to it and sanctions for them. They are expected to also suggest ways forward for the party ahead of future elections.”

He commended the governorship candidate of the party at the election, Mr Valentine Ozigbo for his efforts at reaching out to critical stakeholders of the party and ensuring that the party remains formidable in the state.

“Ozigbo campaigned across every corner of the state even when the society was tensed. The future is still brighter for him. PDP must unite to reclaim the state. I must commend him, his team and all the members of the party who campaigned with him. The leader of our party, Mr Peter Obi and others equally assisted immensely. The PDP campaign team led by Senator Uche Ekwunife did marvellously well at the election,” he noted.

Also speaking, a member of the party, Senator Ben Ndi-Obi, while stressing that sanctioning members found to have engaged in anti-party activities would serve as a deterrent to others, called for support for the Ndubuisi Nwobu-led state working committee of the party.
