Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State on Monday, August 24, 2020, conducted its primaries to elect candidates for the October 31 local government elections.

The election was peaceful, although there were problems in Ibiono Ibom and Nsit Atai councils. In Ibiono Ibom, it was learnt there was a supremacy battle between Senator Bassey Akpan (Uyo) and Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Iniobong Ememobong, on the choice of candidate.

But the Chairperson of Nsit Atai council, Ms Emem Ibanga won the election after a disagreement with the lawmaker representing the area, Mark Esset.

PDP Chairman Udo Ekpenyong said the party met all requirements for peaceful and orderly congresses.

The State High Court has granted an exparte injunction restraining the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) from conducting the election pending determination of the substantive suit.

In a suit by Uwem Udoma and nine others, the court agreed with submissions of lawyers to the applicants. The case was adjourned till August 31.
