Former lawmaker of the upper chamber of the national assembly, Senator Shehu Sani, has endorsed his colleague, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for the Senate President seat of the incoming 10th assembly.

As reported by The Nation, Senator Sani urged that the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) adopt the zoning method of selection and cede the Senate President seat to the southeast geopolitical zone.

While stating equity and fairness as his reason, Senator Sani said they must drop all forms of sentiments and decide on the premise of justice and inclusivity.

He said: “The Senate Presidency should go to the South East for equity and justice."

While making a case for the former Abia state governor, Senator Sani harped that the southeastern region had numerous lawmakers in the red chamber that could vie for the number one seat if the rules of the upper chambers were to be adopted.

He said despite never being a ruling party member, it would only be expected for a modest approach to be adopted to ensure the country's progress.

As reported by The Sun, Senator Sani stated that the current leadership structure for the incoming administration makes it even more proper for the southeastern region to be considered for the senate presidency.

He said: “There is no better person to stabilise the National Assembly and maintain balance like Orji Uzor Kalu, particularly that he has demonstrated his flair as Chief Whip of the Senate.

“I’m not of the APC but I think he remains the best option out of those who offered themselves. And Kalu has the experience and the pedigree as well.”

Meanwhile, the race for the Senate presidential seat has reached a fever pitch ahead of the May 29 transition of the 10th national assembly.

Senator Ali Ndume of Borno State officially joined the race making him one of the big names vying for the coveted position. His declaration makes it the second time he would declare interest in the number one seat at the red chambers.
