10 Nigerian states paying wage award to workers amid economic hardship

A new report by Nations Newspaper reveals that only 10 of the 36 states in Nigeria are paying their wage awards to their workers.

With the states still grappling with the removal of fuel subsidies and the other economic challenges facing them, President Bola Tinubu has appealed to the 36 governors to begin to pay their workers pending the determination of the new minimum wage.

The president who was speaking in Minna, the Niger State capital said the implementation of the wage awards would provide much-needed relief without causing inflationary pressures.

The reports survey by Nations Newspaper was conducted in 15 states.

In Niger State where the comments were made, the government of the state has approved the payment of N20,000 each to its workers.

In Ogun, Governor Dapo Abiodun's administration is paying N10,000 monthly awards to civil servants. It, however, added primary and secondary school pupils to the list with about 100,000 indigent pupils to receive N10,000 each from the government.

The report further stated that students who are indigenes of the state in tertiary institutions will get N50,000 to 20,000.

The Nations report noted that Lagos and Ondo pay the highest wage award of N35,000 to their workers while Oyo and Enugu are second with N25,000. Ekiti and Osun pay N15,000 while Jigawa, Adamawa and Ebonyi pay N10,000.

Some of the states have also extended the payment to local government employees and pensioners. States paying wage awards to workers below:
