A woman in her late 60s has become the third recorded COVID-19 fatality in Osun State, according to the State’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Rafiu Isamotu.

Dr. Isamotu, in a statement on Saturday, confirmed that the woman died at the isolation centre in General Hospital, Asubiaro, Osogbo.

The number of coronavirus-related deaths in the state has now risen to at least three in the last week, having recorded a total of 34 infections.

"On a sad note, we lost a COVID-19 patient in her late 60s at our isolation centre in Osogbo. We pray God to grant her eternal rest and give her family the fortitude to bear the loss," he said.

However, three health workers that had initially tested positive to the disease in the state have fully recovered.

According to Dr. Isamotu the state's COVID-19 index case who came from the United Kingdom has been discharged after testing negative twice. He spent 38 days in isolation.

"With the development, the total number of active cases in the State is now eight," he said, adding that the results came Friday evening from the NCDC's accredited Testing Centre, the African Centre of Excellence in Genomics of Infectious Diseases, Ede.

Dr. Isamotu urged frontline health workers to always use their Personal Protective Equipment, when discharging their duties and maintained that only accredited isolation and treatment centres in the State are allowed to attend to suspected COVID-19 patients.
