Premier League's 2019/20 season suspended over coronavirus outbreak

The Premier League's 2019/20 season has been suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak, following an emergency meeting held by stakeholders.

According to the reports, all matches have now been suspended until till the 4th of April, 2020.

An official statement by the Premier League states that "following a meeting of Shareholders today, it was unanimously decided to suspend the Premier League with the intention of returning on 4 April, subject to medical advice and conditions at the time."

With further updates expected to be provided by the PL, the statement added that the "aim to reschedule the displaced fixtures, including those played by Academy sides, when it is safe to do so."

This is coming after at least four clubs have reported that their players/staff show symptoms of the deadly virus.

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta and Chelsea forward Callum Hudson-Odoi have contracted the virus, according to Friday's news.

Leicester City announced earlier that at least three of their players are also being tested for coronavirus.

Some moments ago, Everton also joined the list by releasing a statement that its entire first-team squad was in self-isolation after a player reported symptoms consistent with the virus.

Watford have also taken the precaution of cancelling training, after several players informed manager Nigel Pearson they were feeling unwell. [SkySports]

The Standard UK reported that embers of the Bournemouth squad are also undertaking isolation.

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said: "Above all, we wish Mikel Arteta and Callum Hudson-Odoi speedy recoveries, and everyone else affected by COVID-19.

"In this unprecedented situation, we are working closely with our clubs, Government, The FA and EFL and can reassure everyone the health and welfare of players, staff and supporters are our priority."

Other affected football competitions include the Spanish La Liga, Italian Serie A, as well as Uefa competitions; the Champions and Europa League.
