Cholera spreads in Abeokuta, one dies, 17 hospitalised

One person has died while 17 others were hospitalised as cholera outbreak spread in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.

The development forced the officer of the  World Health Organisation and officers of the state government to  storm  Sabo community in Abeokuta metropolis where  the 17 cases and one fatality were  recorded.

Our correspondent gathered that the  WHO officer, Ogun State office, Gloria Achibong, and officer of the state disease surveillance, Olatunde Folawo,  stormed the place to give technical support .The disease had penultimate week hit Magboro community in the Obafemi – Owode Local Government Area of the state, killing about 25 persons.

The state officials led by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Ola Oresanya, on Thursday stormed SABO community and commenced the fumigation and decontamination of homes and environment to curtail the outbreak.

Oresanya warned against the abuse of the environment through indiscriminate dumping of refuse and open dedication.

Oresanya said “We are focusing on area with high population density, you can see the population here it is huge and they are so close together; the spread of infection is fast around here. Most of the people ride on motorcycle, the driver that will drive the big man will go on motorcycle to get to work, so you can get infected.”
