COVID-19: Uganda bans public transport for two weeks

President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda

In order to curb the spread of the deadly coronavirus, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has announced a 14-day ban on public transport.

This is coming after last week's closure of all schools, bars, cinemas and ban on public gatherings for 32 days.

Ugandan is currently combating the virus as the rest of the world, having recorded a total of 14 infections, including an eight-month-old baby girl, and no death as of March 26.

The ban which is also binding on the ubiquitous boda-bodas (a popular name for motorcycle taxis) will take effect immediately, according to Mr Museveni during Wednesday's a televised address.

Private cars will only be allowed to carry three passengers including the driver.

The BBC reports that due to cases of Ugandans who do not have travel history, authorities want to limit movements within towns and between regions.

It added that markets, which are often big and overcrowded, will only be allowed to sell food.

The global record as at the time of this reports stands at a total of 472,529 infections and 21,305 deaths, according to Worldometer.
